PELUM is a civil society organization dedicated to rural development in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa. The organization focuses on developing smallholder farmers and rural communities through the promotion of ecologically sound land use practices, particularly in agriculture. PELUM Eswatini provides skills and knowledge about best practices and techniques through a network of like-minded organizations, individuals, and advocates for policies that support environmentally sustainable small-scale farming in Eswatini. They also offer capacity services for partner and member organizations to empower them to build farming community resilience, promote sustainable farming systems, and advocate for small-scale farmers’ development through radio programs.
PELUM Eswatini in collaboration with the Ezulwini Municipal Council is developing the first Agroecology Training & Demonstration Centre (ATDC) in Eswatini, which functions as an Urban Garden to improve food production for Eswatini smallholder farmers through practical demonstrations of agroecological approaches. The site showcases sustainable practices including indigenous seed saving and storage, green energy, dry sanitation toilets, compost making, integrated pest management, seedling nursery, solar drying, recycling, natural soil amendments, disability gardening, and vertical gardening. The benefits of sustainable farming are demonstrated through the first harvest, where PELUM donated to Care Points around Ezulwini.
In conclusion, PELUM Eswatini’s work is commendable, and its impact on smallholder farmers and rural communities is inspiring. For more information and clarity, you can visit the PELUM offices at Mbabane, Checkers, Opposite Cozy Corner. Telephone number: 2410 2998
